Small Business Week 2014 Is Here – Yesterday I Attended #Wektoberfest

Yesterday marked the beginning of Small Business Week across Canada.  Throughout the week there are many events scheduled that you should check out – see the list here.

To kick off the week,  I attended #Wektoberfest in Waterloo, Ontario, held by the Waterloo Innovation Network (WIN).  The event was a combination of a mock Dragon’s Den with three early-stage companies pitching their business ideas for funding, followed by a rock concert featuring 5440 and Kandle.

WIN was founded by one of the new “Dragons”, Mike Wekerle, of the widely popular CBC Dragon’s Den television show.  Mike is CEO of Difference Capital, a finance company that invests in tech, media and healthcare related companies.   Several hundred people attended the event, and from what I saw everyone had a great time.

Following are the three companies that pitched their ideas to Mike and the guest “Dragons”.

1) Shaidee – they offer a sun cover for a parent to wear when carrying a baby.  Watch their actual pitch made to on the Dragon’s Den TV show.

2) Eyedro – they sell a monitor that enables business owners and homeowners to track their usage of electricity, in real time.

3) Beagle – is an artificial intelligence software for contract review and mark-up, done in a novel and user friendly way.

At the end of the event, the “Dragons” voted and selected Beagle as the company they would invest in.

Well done #Wektoberfest!

George
